“You’ve come a long way baby!—a woman’s right to choose—girl power!”—We’re familiar with slogans from the Feminist Movement. It’s influence has extended into the church creating controversies that have split churches, and presented us tough questions that can seem difficult to answer. For the next several weeks, I’ll write about God’s plan for women, or woman’s role in the family, society and church, and then about some unusual situations for women we find in the Bible that meet with God’s approval. This week, I’ll briefly write about where we Christians must stand.
I am convinced the knowledge of God’s intended “gender roles” for both men and women is all but lost by a great majority in America, and, as Christians, our girls and women will not learn the role God intends for them from society. Their minds will be poisoned by television, the public classroom, and their peers. They will not get the truth in the workplace. Many of us, even some whose families have been in the church for generations, did not see a proper example of godly womanhood in our mothers and grandmothers—I don’t mean any offence by that, however grandma is not the standard, grandma is fallible—Scripture is the standard. Let us be certain that we hold to what is right no matter how radical it may seem to the world, and be committed to upholding the boundaries God has set.
The misguided accusations from feminist leaders against Christian belief are unfounded. Christians live by the Bible regardless of whether the world likes it or not, and the Bible clearly teaches the equality of women to men, that women are precious creatures, and that they deserve to be loved and supported. By presenting distinct roles, and differing degrees of authority for men and women, it does no harm to the true cause of women’s suffrage, but in fact establishes it. We don’t advocate mistreating women. Nothing in the history of the world has improved the lot of women more than Christianity has. Informed Christians have no argument against women voting, nor do we view women as second-class citizens, but God intends for men to be men and women to be women. The way of the world today isn’t God’s way, and his way is always best, and the only path to lasting happiness. What this society currently expects of women, because of the deceptive agenda of radical feminists, is the actual burdensome, and Christ would set women free. Next week, I’ll write about God’s plan for women in the family.
