Memorize (and Practice) the Golden rule

goldenrule.jpgAgain, this week, I want to encourage us to memorize Scriptures by presenting another very important passage. This week’s passage is another great “saying of Jesus.” It is the passage often called the Golden Rule. There is only one rule more important, and that is the command to love God. When we live out our relationships by following the Golden Rule, we have done the very best that can be done to be a godly friend, spouse, parent, brother, or acquaintance. It also deserves mentioning that nothing has the power to influence positive change in the lives of others than our acting toward them in the way prescribed by the Golden Rule. The ESV renders the passage as follows:

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Mat 7:12 ESV).

Despite the fact that doctrinal issues and problems are not uncommon these days, nor truly have they ever been uncommon, but problems within churches are at least as commonly based on personality issues. When we say “personality issues,” we mean problems between individuals arising from their inability to get along with one another. Personality issues are often the fault of all parties involved to one degree or another, but may also be the fault of one particular party. No matter who is at fault when problems arise between brethren, it ought to be clear that there would be no problem at all if all parties had related to one another, and behaved toward one another in keeping with the Golden Rule. O how we need desperately to do a better job of applying this rule to our lives!

So, let’s memorize the verse, and then put it into practice!
