Memorizing Scripture
If you’ve been around Highland for the last couple of years you know I like to write articles about Scripture memorization from time to time. I want to focus on a few more good passages to memorize over the next few weeks.
Someone recently said that scripture memorization is a lost discipline in the church. If that’s so, I propose we make haste to find it again. Memorizing God’s word is an extremely important part of growing in the knowledge that enables one to serve fruitfully and face trials and temptations victoriously. Some people sell themselves short by deciding they just can’t memorize. It is true that memorization comes harder for some people than others, but difficulty rarely stops us from getting what we really want! The only real obstacle to effectively memorizing scriptures for most people is themselves. Do you want to be blessed with the knowledge and wisdom that can make you able to glorify God in any circumstance in life? If you do, then decide today to put forth the effort to start memorizing scriptures. I am certain that you will soon reap the rewards of your efforts if you will commit to this discipline.
This week, our first verse is one that highlights the importance of committing verses to memory to start with. The verse is Psalm 119:11. According to the ESV, it reads, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Jesus understood the idea of quoting scripture to aid in resisting temptations. In Matthew 4, he quoted three passages in defense against the three temptations the devil brought against him. Let us all start imitating the Master by memorizing Psalm 119:11 this week!
