Surfing the Web for Christ

cyberspace.jpgAbout a month ago I wrote a few things about using the web as a study and outreach tool, and about avoiding the dangers. To tie up any loose ends, I want to give you a few more words of advice.

 

I wrote about avoiding the dangers on the web. I don’t just mean the obvious ones. Every ideology in the world has a webpage out there dedicated to spreading its views among the masses. The internet spreads information everywhere instantly, so it has fanned the flame of religious disagreements among brethren faster than ever before, because folks from all around the world can discuss their differences in real time. That’s both good and bad. It’s good that it’s certainly got us all talking and thinking. It’s bad that it all too readily facilitates our grouping together into competing camps, or sects, and “shooting” at each other from a safe distance. The element of looking into your “opponent’s” eyes and seeing his humanity is removed. That’s a problem. At the same time, blogs and discussion sites are wielding tremendous influence, so get out there and join the discussions, but only after (and I cannot stress this enough) making a deep, personal study of the Scriptures for yourself to decide where you stand. I’ve seen it play out repeatedly: if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.


 As a general safeguard for your souls, please remember your common sense when surfing the spiritual web. Truth is truth, and if that’s so when you step out in front of a bus, it’s also true with God’s commands. Baptism is essential to salvation, and there’s no way around that. Any kind of sexual activity outside of marriage between one man and one woman is fornication. It is sin, always has been, always will be! The Bible clearly says there’s one church, not many churches, and not one church expressed in multiple sects or denominations. If you keep those core truths in mind, you’ll probably be ok. Keep praying, keep studying, feel free to bring your questions to Wayne, me, or any of our elders, and by all means get out there online and start influencing others for Christ!

    Josh,

    Thank you for this reminder, it comes at the very moment that I was surfing the web looking for more information on some of the terms you used in your Sunday morning Bible class that I am unfamiliar with, premillennialism, apocalyptic and a few others that have slipped my mind at the moment. I have been searching for those words and came up with all kinds of information that didn’t really help me so I thought I would email you. I was hoping that you could email me some more details about those ideas and maybe even some literature that you have used in your study of Ezekiel. Thank you and I look forward to your response.

    Also I was wondering if there would be more information coming out about the workshop coming up on March 13th. My husband and I would both like to come but were unsure if there would be a class for the children during this class. Thanks again
