The Movies…
The Oscars were handed out last night. I watched part of the show, and enjoyed some of it. I love movies. I love music, television and books too. I love the arts. However, there are many “works of art” that express a worldview that I simply cannot support. As a result, there is much in music, books, and movies that once I would have enjoyed when I didn’t truly seek the Lord’s will, that now grieves me. Last year, the big screen was disgraced by showings of the film “The Golden Compass,” an adaptation of one of the books by anti-theist author Philip Pullman. Pullman’s books were written partly as an aggressive atheist’s reaction to “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Thanks to many religious people (including myself) rejecting the film, it performed poorly in the United States. In my eyes that is a victory for the Lord’s agenda. God wants to heal the world through Christ and his church, and so we have to have that agenda in mind every time we buy a movie ticket or pick a flick off the shelf. Christians should not support any media (music, movies, books, etc.) that have an agenda harmful to the cause of truth and righteousness. If unbelievers wish to produce and support lewd, violent, and atheistic, or anti-theistic media, they have the right to make that choice, but let no one who names Christ as Lord participate!
On the other hand, we need to earnestly support media that is positive and helpful to society. There are at least a couple of movies coming to the big screen that we should support.
First, this Spring, a documentary led and hosted by the well known Ben Stein is coming to theatres. It is called “Expelled,” and is about the persecution that comes down hard on those in education and media that support the belief that the Universe was created by a “Higher Intelligence” (God). Primarily the documentary is about preserving (or re-acquiring) freedom of speech for those of us who recognize that the scientific evidence supports belief in Creation. The movie will feature Mr. Stein’s experiences and those of many scientists who have been persecuted for daring to question Darwinism. From what I have seen in my investigations on the website, I can heartily endorse this movie. While Mr. Stein doesn’t take as strong a stand on Genesis 1 as I do, it is a movie that is our friend, and deserves support. Take your family to see this movie, and encourage others to as well. Or, check out the website by clicking the link below and decide for yourself.
Another film coming out later this year is the second film installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series, Prince Caspian. It is due to be in theatres on May 16. The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels by the late C. S. Lewis that are full of allegorical references to Christianity. Lewis was a former atheist, turned defender of the Christian faith whose writings, fiction and otherwise, have had a lasting impact. I have already read five of the seven to my sons and can endorse them as quality reading material with no hesitation. Be sure to check up about the facts on this next installment coming to theatres. If producers follow the same course they did with the first installment, it will be a movie worth seeing.
I am certain that there will be other very worthy movies on the screen this year. I am also certain there will be many that are not up to Christian standards. Ultimately you have to make your own choices and remember that Jesus is sitting in the seat with you. As Christians, we have a mission to save the world, and we can only do that, and do it well, if we stick up for what’s right. We can do that so far as movies and other media are concerned by supporting the good ones and rejecting the bad ones.
