Who are you listening to?

The Bible certainly teaches that we are to "test all things" (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Like the Bereans, we are to search the Scriptures daily to see if we are being taught the truth (Acts 17:11). The Scriptures make us complete and equip us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17), so we should be guided by God's Word alone. However, one of the principal characteristics of a good Bible student is humility. It would be arrogant to believe that we cannot benefit from the study of others. We must not be lazy in our study, and we should utilize all available tools in our search for correct understanding. Of course, in using Bible study tools, we must "eat the fish and throw away the bones." That is, we should accept what is in harmony with Scripture, and reject what conflicts with the Bible. Also, as Glenn explains in his teacher training class, we should not immediately run to a commentary when studying a passage; we should first allow the Bible to interpret itself. However, commentaries and other tools are very useful for providing historical and cultural information and insights into the orginal languages of Scripture to aid in our understanding of the Bible. The serious Bible student will make use of these tools, while at the same time recognizing that the Bible is our sole authoritative guide.
