Childrens Ministries

At Highland Heights Church of Christ we love and care about every child in our midst.  We offer classes and activities for more than 100 children ages 9 months through 5th grade.  We are able to offer this wide array of classes and activities because of the voluntary efforts of many of our adult members, who seek to help our children grow into spiritual maturity as they grow in physical stature.

Each Sunday and Wednesday, our highest priority is to provide a safe and friendly learning environment for our children. In addition to the activities listed below, we publish a bi-monthly newsletter to keep parents and teachers informed of upcoming events and activities.

Bible classes

Children’s Bible classes are offered at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings and 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings for children ages 9 months through 5th grade.  Each class builds on the previous one, preparing children to enter the Highland Heights Youth (2HYM) group when they promote to the 6th grade.  In every class you’ll find teachers leading children in learning Bible stories, memorizing scripture, learning songs and engaging in crafts and activities that reinforce the lesson being taught. To help you find your child’s class, we offer an updated schedule each quarter, with classroom locations and teachers’ names.

Our education program is overseen by Joshua Pappas, Minister of Education and Evangelism. Roy Mullins is the elder over education, and Cory Patterson and Mark Mayes are the deacons responsible for this effort. The education committee meets at 4:30 on the 4th Sunday of each month.  Any parent or teacher is welcome to participate.

During worship services

An attended nursery is available for children up to 3 years of age.  The nursery is located directly across from the east-facing auditorium doors.  Nursing mothers will find a private room located in the preschool classroom wing.  For families teaching little ones to quietly participate in worship services, we provide a worship training room that can be accessed from the foyer.

Sunday evening activities

During the 6 p.m. worship service, we offer Bible Hour for children 4 to 8 years of age.  The children gather in a room next to the small fellowship hall for an hour filled with songs, activities, puppet skits and memorizing the books of the Bible.  When your child successfully memorizes the books, he or she will be officially added to our “66 Club” with a recognition ceremony held 2-3 times during the year, and given a personalized Bible to commemorate the occasion. For more information, see Jeff Carden, or Justin and Sherry Britton.

For children in 3rd grade through high school, we offer Bible Bowl training during this hour.  Highland Heights participates in the Rutherford county Bible Bowl competitions held monthly at MTCS in Murfreesboro.

Missions with Mommy. Every other Wednesday morning, our preschoolers and parents get together for an activity geared toward helping our youngest members develop a servant’s heart.  See Destiny Locke or Tracy Deocales for more information.

  • Library. In our foyer is a library with Christian books and videos that parents may borrow for home use. The library is overseen by Lori Winningham and Christy McClenny.
  • Sunday devos for 3rd-5th graders.  Led by John and Jeanetta Cothron – Children in this age group get together monthly for a time of fellowship, with devotionals and service projects.
  • Summer activities. Each summer, Highland Heights creates a fun and Bible-filled Vacation Bible School program.  Children from 4 years of age through 5th grade are welcome, as are their friends and any child from the community.  Highland Heights members’ children ages 8 and up may sign up for a week-long church camp.
  • Daily Bible lessons. Check back here each day for a new Bible lesson; you and your child can complete the Bible in just 6 months.
